- You make the syrup first and cool it over night. As per recipe attached. Download or print it and even use with the cook mode. So easy.
- The next day mix the dough and cut it into strips and plait the dough strips.
- Put aside and heat up the oil to fry them in. They will turn over once one side is cooked.

Ingredients
The Syrup
- 6 cups of white sugar (6×250 ml)
- 3 cups of water (3 x 250 ml)
- 2ml of Cream of Tartar
- 4 cinnamon sticks

- 4 cups of flour
- 3 tsp of baking powder (15ml)
- 1/2 tsp of salt
- 2 Tbsp of butter (30 ml)
- 2 eggs
- 1 Tbsp of sugar (15 ml )
- 1 cup Water (250 ml)
- oil for frying.(deep fry)
Instructions
First make the syrup (the syrup must be chilled in the fridge before you make the koeksister)
How to make the syrup.
- Boil al the syrup ingredients together, stirring now and again in the beginning. Until all the sugar has been dissolved. Boil for 15 minutes.
- Then cool before chilling in the refrigerator.(the syrup can be stored in the fridge for about 2 weeks. In a sealed container.)
Make the koeksisters.
- Sift the flour baking powder and the salt.
- Rub in the butter.
- Beat the eggs sugar and the water together.
- Add this to the flour mixture and knead together very well until smooth and shiny. Allow to rest in the fridge for a few hours.(may be made the day before)
- Then roll out dough thinly and cut into strips and make them about 3-4 inches long and plait.
- Heat the oil and fry the koeksister in deep oil turning when brown. Then plunge them in cold syrup.
- The hot koeksister will such up the syrup. Then lay them in a dish to cool.
- Then place them in a refrigerator to cool.
- Serve them on plates and enjoy the syrupy koeksister.
