In this recipe we use rolled oats and brown sugar with a little flour and cold butter. Crumbled evenly over the apple slices for a topping. Baked until golden.
Should you cook apples before making a crumble?
No, the apples do not need to be cooked before making a apple pie or tart. Just slice when you ready to mix them with the flour and brown sugar before they brown. Other wise mix them with some lemon juice to prevent browning. The apples will cook well in the pie as with this recipe they are slice thinly.
What apple is best for baking crumble?

How To
Preheat the oven first and grease the baking pie dish or casserole dish.
Make the shortbread crust recipe if you prefer to. But my go to is always the biscuit base with butter and brown sugar. So easy and quick to make. Crush the biscuits finely in a bowl and add the melted butter and sugar. Mix this altogether in a bowl then spread and press evenly in the dish. Bake for ten minutes then remove.
Slice the apples thinly, I used a mix of granny smith and some sweet red gala apples. Mix these slices in a bowl with cinnamon, brown sugar and flour well. The flour will combine the ingredients when it is baked. Spread these apple slices evenly over the crust of the dish.
Mix the streusel of rolled oats, flour, brown sugar and cold butter pieces by hand well until well combined as a dough. Break up and sprinkle the streusel over the apple filling evenly. So all the apples are covered with the oat mixture.
Place in the oven and bake for 30 minutes, until the oat topping is golden. Then cover the dish with foil so not to burn the streusel oat topping further. Bake for a further 40-50 minutes until the apples inside are cooked and soft.
Leave this apple oat crumble pie to cool on a cooling rack for at least two hours before slicing.
Serve with ice cream or whipped cream for a delicious dessert.
To store left over apple crumble, cover and seal and place in the fridge it will be good for up to three days.

Ingredients
Make this Easy Shortbread Crust Pastry
OR make a biscuit and butter base below.
- 1 packet of Graham crackers or Tennis biscuits or coconut biscuits 240 grams
- 115 grams of cold butter
- 35 grams of brown sugar
The Filling
- 6 (3 Lbs)green granny smith or baking apples. (some of each) Sliced.
- 1/2 cup (100grams) brown sugar
- 3 Tablespoons of flour
- 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
Oat streusel topping
- 3/4 cup (55g) rolled oats
- 1/4 cup (35 g) flour
- 1/4 cup (45 g) brown sugar
- 1/4 cup of cold butter cut into small pieces
Instructions

- Or use a biscuit base. Recipe below. no. 4
- Preheat the oven at 190 Deg. C(375 Deg. F)
- Crush the biscuits finely and add the sugar and melt the butter. Add altogether and mix together. Grease or spray and cook the dish base. Or line it with wax proof paper. Totally up to you. Spread it out on the bottom of the dish press it level. Place in the oven and bake it for 10 minutes. Set aside.
- Next step is to combine your apple slices with the sugar, flour and cinnamon in a bowl to coat them all well.
- Add the apple mix over the top of the biscuit or shortbread crust base. Level them out evenly in the baking dish.
- Now in a bowl mix the oat streusel with, oats, flour and brown sugar together. Then add in the butter pieces and press all of these ingredients together with a fork until all is totally combined. It should look like a cookie dough.
- Sprinkle and crumble this oat mixture over the apples in the dish equally.
- Place this dish in the oven and bake for 30 minutes until the streusel is golden brown. Take the dish out and cover with aluminum foil and bake for a further 40-50 minutes until the apples inside are cooked and they should bubble at the edges of the dish. Then they are done.
- Take the apple pie out and leave to cool on a cooling rack for at least 2 hours.
- Serve sliced when cool with some whipped cream or ice cream.
- Store in the fridge the left overs, covered and sealed to keep the apple pie moist.
