How do you cook potatoes on coals?
Before wrapping the clean potato in foil, prick them with a fork. It allows the potato to release steam from the potato. This recipe does not need to have butter or spices added to the potato before wrapping to bake on the open coals. But it is another way of doing it. Adding the butter and salt and pepper to the split open or cut open baked potato once unwrapped is so delicious.
How long do you let charcoal burn before cooking?
It depends on how much charcoal or wood you need to burn for the braai or barbecue you will be grilling, or braaiing. If a larger meal is planned, then light your fire at least 20 – 25 minutes before hand or more. Depending on the woods or charcoal you using, and how quickly it burns to coals. You will need to first grill your meats on a hotter coals, then near the end you would add your breads or garlic loaves and foil wrapped potatoes and veggies. Turning the foiled potato’s over now and again to prevent burning. Testing if the potato’s are cooked by prodding them with a long pronged fork. If tender then they are cooked. This is why this recipe only add the butter once the potato is opened.

How To make Baked Potato in Foil on Coals
Wash and clean potato, for the meal. Firstly it would be a side dish for a braai or barbecue on coals. Therefor the coals would of been ready to grill your meat.
Poke the potato with a fork on top before wrapping. Wrap the clean potato in foil about twice, to protect the potato from burning. This will allow the steam from the potato to escape out from the skin.
Place on the side of the coals where it is not to hot. Cook the potato slowly and turn over now and again so that they are cooked evenly. Should take around 20 -25 minutes to cook. Also depending on the size of the potato used.

Once the wrapped potato is cooked open it up and slit the potato across, such as below. This will allow you to press it open with your hand and the cooked inside of the potato comes out.

How to test if the potato is baked stick with a sharp fork or knife and if potato is soft then they will be done.

Leaving the cooked potato in the skin. Dot butter and salt and pepper to taste in the open potato. Serve with your main dish. Remove from the foil and place on a serving dish.

Ingredients
- 4 medium clean white potato (with skin on)
- Butter (unsalted or salted)
- Salt and pepper (if salted butter is used, then check for taste first)
- Aluminum foil (to wrap potato with)
- Hot coals for a braai or barbecue.
Instructions
- If you are braaiing and have hot coals then make this potato,
- Clean and cut the slit on top of the potato skin and wrap the potato twice in foil. To protect them from burning.
- When the coals are right, place the foil wrapped potato on the side of the hot coals. (you braai or grill your meat on the hot coals on the grill)
- Turn them with a braai tong now and again so they cook evenly. Stick with a braai fork or sharp knife to see if they are soft and cooked. (you can do this through the foil)
- When they are soft and your meal is ready, open them up and cut them and squeeze them to push the cooked potato out. Then dot them with butter and salt and pepper them to taste. Leave them in their skins. Serve on the plate with your meats and enjoy.
