Which tomato is best for caprese?
It depends on what caprese recipe you are making. For larger caprese recipes you can use the red beefsteak tomatoes, delicious. But for this recipe we use smaller cherry tomatoes. You can also use Roma, plum, grape or sun gold tomatoes. the Roma tomatoes do well as they have less pips in and so not add to much liquid to the dish. Use red or yellow for a pleasing salad with greens.
What is a substitute for balsamic vinegar in Caprese salad?
You can substitute balsamic vinegar with apple cider vinegar at the same measures in the recipe. Adding a little sugar for sweetener. Apple cider vinegar does not need to be reduced. Or use another dressing made with olive oil mix with some lemon. You can also use a mix of Worcestershire Sauce with some lemon juice and sweetener for a similar dressing to balsamic vinegar.
How long does Caprese salad last in the fridge?
You can store your made ahead caprese salad in the fridge before you serve for a cold side dish. But keep the tomato and the cheese separate as it will soften the cheese. But once made and you want to store left over salad, cover and seal in a container. This will keep for at least 2-3 days.

How To
Lets start off washing the cherry tomatoes and the basil leaves. Collect and get all your ingredients in the measures needed. Or double or triple for larger crowds for dinners. Special occasions dress with leaves and balsamic glaze.
With a nice sharp knife cut the cherry tomatoes and the mini mozzarella balls in half. Try and make them the same size, or use pieces that are similar in size.
Place in a bowl and mix them with dried oregano herbs. Then drizzle in the olive oil, mix well without breaking the salad up. Add your salt and black pepper to this salad for taste. Taste to see if there is enough.
Reduce the balsamic vinegar according to directions in the recipe. Keep in a separate container or drizzle over the salad when served.
Serve with a meal as a cold side dish. Make these ahead of time, then add the spices and olive oil.
When you make them ahead of time, store them separately in the fridge in a sealed container to prevent the tomato juices from making the cheeses soft.

Ingredients
- 2 cups of Cherry tomatoes
- 1 1/2 cups of mozzarella
- 1/2 cup of fresh basil leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano spices
- Salt and ground Black pepper to taste
- 2–3 tablespoons of olive oil
- Balsamic vinegar glazed
Instructions
- Wash the tomatoes and the fresh basil leaves off. Dry on drying cloth. Have the mozzarella made into balls.
- With a sharp knife slice the cherry tomatoes in half and the mozzarella balls. They should all be the same size. place in a bowl.
- Break the fresh washed basil leaves into twos or ones.
- Add you oregano herbs and and toss lightly, then add the olive oil and toss those so that the tomato and cheese are all coated. Add the salt and pepper, to taste.
- Reduce the balsamic vinegar in a hot pan, then simmering until it thickens. To a syrup like consistency. To test its done, it will stick to the back of the spoon.
- Drizzle over the salad served in a serving dish or add separately on the table for those that wish to add the balsamic vinegar to the salad.
- This salad can be made ahead and the spices and olive oil tossed in before serving.
