How To make Chocolate Orange Hot Cross Buns
How to make the dough in the bread machine:
Using a bread machine to prepare the dough makes this recipe simple and reliable, especially if you prefer not to knead by hand.
- Start by whisking the warm milk with the egg and vanilla extract to create an even liquid base.
- Add the ingredients to the bread machine in the order recommended by your manufacturer and select the dough cycle.
- When the machine signals, add the cinnamon, fresh orange zest, and chocolate chips so they are evenly incorporated without overmixing.
- Allow the full dough cycle to run, letting the machine handle the kneading and first rise, until you have a smooth, well proved dough ready for shaping.

Shaping, baking, and glazing the buns:
Once the dough cycle is complete, turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and continue with the shaping as outlined in the recipe.
- Divide and roll into smooth, even balls, then arrange them in a prepared baking pan
- leaving space for the final rise until puffy and well proofed.
- Pipe the traditional crosses over the tops and bake until golden and fragrant.
- While still warm from the oven, brush generously with the fresh orange glaze so it absorbs into the crust and creates a glossy, citrus sweet finish.

- Serve the hot cross buns fresh on the day they are baked for the best flavor and texture, or store them at room temperature in a covered container or wrapped in a clean cloth for the family to enjoy on Good Friday. If they last that long! 😉
